New Milestone for Acupuncture in Turkish Veterinary Medicine

Veterinary acupuncture was first introduced in Turkey in the early 2000s, though its use remained limited for many years. Progress in education and broader adoption of the practice was slow during this period. However, as more scientific studies emerged,
comparing the effectiveness of acupuncture with Western medicine, the practice began to gain recognition as both a standalone treatment and a complementary therapy.

The year 2023 marked a pivotal moment for veterinary acupuncture in Turkey. At the WATCVM Congress, Dr. Erhan Gökdağ established a connection with Chi University, paving the way for collaboration to bring highquality acupuncture training to Turkey.

In 2024, Chi University launched its Veterinary Acupuncture training program in Turkey. For the first time, Turkish veterinarians gained access to a comprehensive, internationally recognized acupuncture education program within their own country.

The Small Animal Veterinary Medicine Association (KHVHD) Congress also significantly raised awareness of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) in Turkey. Dr. Huisheng Xie delivered two landmark presentations at the congress: “How to Use Acupuncture
Therapy for the Treatment of IVDD in Dogs and Cats?” and “How to Use Acupuncture for Pain Management in Dogs and Cats?” These were the first acupuncture-focused presentations at Turkish veterinary congresses in the past decade.

This renewed interest in veterinary acupuncture signals great potential for the future of TCVM in Turkey. With ongoing support from Chi University and local advocates, this field is poised to grow, enhancing the clinical practices of Turkish veterinarians
through a more holistic approach to animal care.

Dr. Huisheng Xie, founder of Chi University, recently traveled to India to share his expertise with the Pet Practitioners Association of Mumbai. Nearly 80 veterinarians attended the seminar, where Dr. Xie introduced how integrative medicine—such as acupuncture
and herbal therapy—can enhance modern pet care.

Thank you to the Pet Practitioners Association of Mumbai for the warm welcome and commitment to advancing veterinary medicine!

While in India, Dr. Xie also hosted an acupuncture workshop
and provided care for two elephants through Wildlife SOS. Bani, a baby elephant injured in a train crash, and Zara, a 53-year-old elephant, were both treated using a combination of dry needling, electroacupuncture, and aqua-acupuncture. To learn more
about the important work Wildlife SOS is doing, visit www.wildlifesos.org.

The first Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist (CVA) course in India through Chi University has its on-site labs beginning this July. We’re excited to see TCVM education
continue to grow around the world.
