A Hip Fracture in a Race Horse Treated with TCVM
Hip fractures are not uncommon in Thoroughbred racing horses. Many of these fractures are characterized by a fissure line at the wing of the ilium and do not immediately cause a decrease in performance or clinical signs of lameness. Typically, the fractures are only recognized once there is visible muscle atrophy of the middle gluteal and descending of the sacroiliac joint on the same side as the lesion.
This webinar will focus on a famous racehorse in Brazil that suffered a fracture of the left wing of the ilium in two places with avulsion of fragments. Fifteen days post-injury, he received treatment including acupuncture, electroacupuncture, magnetotherapy, laser-acupuncture, and Chinese herbal medicine. He received treatment three times per week, and after one year, had returned to training. He had two successful starts after returning to racing, and while he is currently recovering from a hoof issue, the goal is to enter an important race in Brazil in June.
